Coin Stitch Variation (Kawari Zenizashi)

Kawari Zenizashi (Coin Stitch Variation) sashiko pattern, printable stitching diagram

Meaning

Zenizashi means "coin stitch"; kawari marks this as a variation. The small floating squares at alternating diamond centers echo the square hole in old zeni coins, the round cast-copper currency of Edo-period Japan.

Coin motifs are often associated with wealth or good fortune, especially in crest and merchant imagery. Here, that association stays light: the pattern borrows the coin shape without needing a fixed symbolic claim.

History

Kawari Zenizashi is built on the same 45-degree diagonal lattice as Sanjū Hishi Tsunagi, but it swaps nested diamonds for alternating coin-squares and open crossings. That is a shared construction, not necessarily a shared history.

As a named sashiko motif, zenizashi appears mostly in present-day teaching, sample books, and kit listings. The coin imagery behind it is older and well known; the stitched pattern name itself seems more practical and descriptive.

Stitching notes

Kawari Zenizashi is built on a 45-degree diagonal lattice. Every other crossing carries a small floating coin-square, with its four corners tied back to the lattice by short arms. The crossings in between stay open, so the surface reads as coins strung along diagonal lines.

Stitch order follows that logic: work each coin-square first, corners and all, before running the long diagonal lines corner to corner through the open crossings between them. Because the coin-squares are small and self-contained, they’re forgiving to place; the real discipline is keeping the long diagonals straight and evenly spaced once the squares are down.

It works well in two colors, with gold for the coin-squares and a main color for the lattice. A single color gives a quieter, more classic result.
